Uniformity, as a new social model?

A speculative inquiry that brings you in 2200 when our society has developed a new way of coping with the effects of our actions on the environment. The embrace of new technologies and a prioritization of sustainability over ourselves has restructured the textile industry. This project suggests a protective outfit that fits multiple body types and focuses on the idea of need and our relationship to our consumption behaviours.

This project aims to question ideas of consumption around the theme of garments. Clothing is a topic we can all understand and relate to, no matter our interest in fashion. This relationship with garments started as primarily protective but rapidly developed to being a way of proving, identity, status, and interests. Technological improvements and the development of the industries have allowed many positive changes for the masses. They also led to a more destructive outcome; slave labour and textile pollution. The effects of the fashion industry on our planet need to change and many companies and designers are taking measures to inform the mass population of these effects. However, in our fast paced environment, we have developed a numbness about critical information and news and prioritize personal pleasure, desire, want. We do not focus on need.

This project is about discourse. It is about behaviour change, through conversation, questioning, and most importantly, doing with others. I want to influence people in choosing conscientiously how they buy things as a step towards sustainable consumption.

Considering the future of design through educating others about their relationship with the objects they consume is crucial to me. It is important to have a different relationship with who we design for.

We need consumers that think to help us think for and with them.
